Get students excited about graphing with this Free Coordinate Graphing Mystery Picture Worksheets PDF. This Graphing activity is available in a First Quadrant Graph and a Four Quadrants Graph. Plotting points on the coordinate plane will reveal the Mystery Picture of a Spaceship. Continue reading to find out the many ways you can use this graphing worksheet to engage students today!
Teaching the Coordinate Plane with Quadrants
The best way to teach coordinate graphing is to start by introducing the concept of a coordinate plane, and the use of an x-axis and a y-axis to locate points. You’ll want to provide examples of points on the coordinate plane and have students practice plotting them. Then, introduce the concept of ordered pairs and have students practice finding the coordinates of points.
Plotting points on a coordinate graph is a simple process that requires a few basic steps.
- Step 1: determine the coordinates of your points. These can be written as an ordered pair in the form of (x, y). For example, the coordinate (9, 7) would indicate nine units to the right of the origin and seven units above the origin.
- Step2: begin plotting the points. Start by finding the x-coordinate of the point on the x-axis. Then follow your pencil from that point to the y-axis, marking the y-coordinate. Finally, plot a point where the two ordered pairs meet.
- Step 3: connect each point with a straight line from Start to Stop reading the points vertically.
Repeat this process for each point you need to plot and watch the mystery picture unfold before you!
First and Four Quadrant
When teaching the coordinate plane you want to find a graph that is suitable for your students. For elementary grades, or when just introducing the coordinate plane, choose the First Quadrant graph. For upper grades, or students who already have graphing practice, choose the Four Quadrant graph. Both graphs are available with this free download.
How to use the Free Coordinate Graphing Mystery Picture Worksheets PDF
The Spaceship Coordinate Graphing Worksheets are easy for your students to use. The coordinate pairs are on the same page as the graph, making it simple for students to track their progress as they graph their coordinate pairs (and less printing for you!).
